“Whispers In The Shadow” written by Amina Sb
Ten-year-old Kevin was lying on his bed with his blanket reaching his neck. He is having a cold fever and due to that, he didn’t go to school nor did he leave his room throughout the day. His mom could come and check up on him every now and then making sure that he’s doing better.
After Kevin's dinner, Kevin laid back on his bed and his mom walked into the room to check up on him one last time before going to bed. She gives Kevin his medicine and while he takes it, she checks his temperature. He seems to be getting better. "Your temperature seems to be much better than before. I think you will be pretty good by tomorrow." She said
Kevin smiled and laid back on the bed while his mother tugged him in. She gives him a goodnight kiss before she switches off the light and walks out of the room.
Later that night, the pale crescent moon shone like a silvery claw in the night sky as the occasional barking of faraway dogs broke the silence of the night. Kevin was lost in the depths of his dream when an unexpected sound jolted him back to reality.
Kevin's heart raced with fear as his eyes darted around the room, searching for the source of the sound. He wracks his brain, trying to recall where he might have heard it before finally realizing it was just a jolt from his own sleep.
Back in bed, poor Kevin snuggles under the covers, trying to go back to sleep. However, it's only a matter of moments before that dreaded sound creeps back into his ears, disrupting his sleep once more.
Poor Kevin, startled, leaps out of bed as the terrifyingly loud sound echoes through the room. Acting swiftly, he flicks on the lights, hoping to uncover the source of the disturbance. His eyes scan the room, but there is nothing to be seen. Though the sound is now fainter, it continues to echo in his ears. Kevin decided to follow the sound's eerie trail which led him to the dimly lit corridor outside his room. Trembling with unease, he musters the courage to grasp the cold doorknob, he turns the doorknob, cautiously opening the door to peek outside, only to find an empty hallway.
Shocked when he realizes the sound isn't coming from there, Kevin quickly hops back into bed and hides under the blanket. He was terrified and hoping that the sound would stop, but it persisted. Suddenly, an urgent need to use the bathroom hits him, which always happens to him when he gets scared. Trying his best to hold it in, he struggles, but eventually, he can't anymore. In a rush, he throws off the covers and prepares to sprint to the bathroom. But, unfortunately, he trips and his ears guide him to the source of the sound.
It's behind the wall.
Fearfully, Kevin winces while standing up, his eyes widen as he sets his gaze on the wall. It doesn't seem possible that such a sound could come from there.
Kevin’s heart was pounding with curiosity, he couldn't resist the urge to go and check. He walks to the wall shivering in fear as he leans in and places his ear against the wall. Just as he suspected, the sound was indeed coming from there. Frightened, he takes a step back as the noise grows louder, his heart racing with fear. In a rush of panic, he reaches for the doorknob, ready to escape the room. But suddenly, the noise stops halting his actions.
The room falls into an eerie silence, and all Kevin can hear is the thumping of his own heartbeat. He hesitates, frozen in place, and slowly turns around, scanning every corner of the room for any signs of what just occurred. He walks over to the wall and pressed his ear against it once more, but there is no trace of the sound. Everything appears to be back to normal. Kevin ponders for a moment, wondering if he could have been hallucinating. After all, his mom did mention that fever can play tricks on the mind.
With every beat of his heart, Kevin's fear diminishes and he lies back in bed, he switches off the light and drifts into a fitful sleep. As sleep gently embraces him, he feels a subtle tug on his blanket, causing it to slowly slip away from his body. At first, he brushes it off, pulling the blanket back up to his chest, yearning for a blissful sleep but suddenly the blanket yanks off his body as if pulled by an unseen force. Fear tightens its grip, leaving Kevin paralyzed, unable to check or move. Desperate to call out for his mom, he opens his mouth, but no words escape his lips. With each thump of his racing heart, he realizes he's not alone. A chilling breathing sound fills the room, sending shivers down his spine. Kevin's eyes shut tight, hoping it's all just a nightmare.
Kevin, feeling a quiver down his body, decided to take a peek when the room fell silent. He cautiously peeked and seeing no one, he swiftly rose from the bed and glanced at the fallen blanket on the floor. He hurriedly rushed to the door wanting to tell his mom what happened but as he opened the door, he was confronted by a chilling, eerie creature. Fear consumed Kevin as he stared into its menacing gaze. Overcome with terror, he let out a thunderous scream before losing consciousness.
In a short while, Kevin jolts awake, finding himself on the bed, vividly remembering what happened. Confusion fills his mind as he wonders how he ended up there. Suddenly, the door to his room starts to slowly open, causing his heart to race as he fears it might be the creature. With a sigh of relief, he sees his mom enter. She smiled at him but the minute she saw the blanket on the floor, her eyes narrowed and the smile turned into a frown. She scolds him, reminding him to keep his blanket in place. Kevin insists he wasn't the one who moved it, trying to explain what happened but his mom didn’t listen believing it’s another one of his imaginative stories to avoid being punished.
Kevin's mom picks up the blanket and carefully places it back on the bed. Frustration flashes across her face as she scolds him, declaring that there will be no bedtime stories tonight. Confusion fills Kevin's mind as he wonders why she would say that when it's already too late for stories.
She then gives him his medicine, but Kevin hesitates wondering why she's giving it to him again. His mom notices the expression on his face and tells him to take the medicine, emphasizing that it's necessary for him to feel better and go to school.
Kevin was bewildered and he insisted that he already took it. But his mom dismisses his claims, accusing him of making up lies and demanding that he take the medicine.
Reluctantly, Kevin complies, swallowing the bitter liquid. His mom then checks his temperature and finds that he's starting to improve. She then leans in and places a gentle kiss on his forehead, bidding him a soft "Goodnight."
Startled once again, Kevin wondered why his mom was repeating her routine.
Just as she's about to leave, Kevin asks her for the time. With a sigh, she replies, "It's nine pm." Before he could ask any more questions, she switched off the light, plunging the room into darkness, and quietly closed the door.
Kevin's mind swirled with confusion as his body froze in shock. He couldn't help but question if he was simply lost in a dream, unable to grasp the reality before him. The pieces of the puzzle seemed to elude him, leaving him in a state of uncertainty and doubt. Was Kevin's imagination playing tricks on him, or was there truly something mysterious behind the wall?
“Discovering Rome” written by Amadi Moses
In the ancient world, a time of togas and sandals, there was a village called Rome. This village was known for its colourful characters, lively marketplaces, and a penchant for dramatic gestures. But how did this village become the mighty city that would shape the course of history? Well, buckle up and get ready for a hilarious and exaggerated account of the founding of Rome.
Our story begins with two brothers named Romulus and Remus. These brothers were mischievous from the moment they were born. Legend has it that they were raised by a she-wolf, which explains their wild and untamed nature. They were like a Roman version of the Marx Brothers, causing chaos and laughter wherever they went.
One sunny day, as Romulus and Remus were causing their usual mischief, they stumbled upon a group of shepherds.
These shepherds were not your ordinary shepherds, mind you. They were gods in disguise, looking for some amusement in the mortal realm. And boy, did they find it in the form of Romulus and Remus.
The gods, amused by the brothers' antics, decided to play a little game. They transformed themselves into sheep and allowed the brothers to capture them. Little did Romulus and Remus know that they were about to become the unwitting participants in a divine prank.
As the brothers paraded their "sheep" through the village, the gods decided to take their prank to the next level. With a wave of their celestial hands, they transformed the sheep back into gods, who then proceeded to chase Romulus and Remus through the streets. Imagine the sight: two grown men running for their lives from a group of naked, furious gods. Hilarious, right?
Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, a friendly wolf appeared out of nowhere. This wolf, who had a taste for divine buttocks, decided to lend a helping paw. With a series of well-placed nips, the wolf sent the gods yelping back to Mount Olympus, leaving Romulus and Remus in awe of their furry saviour.
The wolf, who turned out to be quite the character, took the brothers under its metaphorical paw and raised them as its own. It taught them how to hunt, how to survive in the wild, and how to tell a good joke. It was like a Disney movie but with more biting and less singing.
As Romulus and Remus grew older, they realised that they were destined for something greater. They had a vision of building a city that would be the envy of all other cities. So, they set out on a quest to find the perfect location. After much wandering, they stumbled upon a hill with seven annoyingly talkative birds perched on top.
Taking this as a sign from the gods, Romulus and Remus decided to build their city on that very hill. They named it Rome after themselves because, well, why not? They gathered people from neighbouring villages, promising them free wine and gladiator shows, and began constructing their dream city.
The city of Rome grew rapidly, attracting people from far and wide. It became a hub of culture, politics, and, of course, hilarious mishaps. Romulus and Remus, now revered as the founders of Rome, were hailed as heroes. They were praised for their bravery, their leadership, and their ability to attract wild animals.
But as Rome flourished, a sense of unease settled upon the brothers. They couldn't help but wonder what the future held for their beloved city. Would it continue to thrive and become a beacon of civilization? Or would it fall into chaos and become a never-ending comedy of errors? Only time will tell.
Little did Romulus and Remus know that their story was just beginning, and the suspense of what lay ahead would keep them on the edge of their metaphorical wolf-skin seats. The gods, who had witnessed the brothers' transformation from troublemakers to visionaries, had plans of their own. Plans that would test their friendship, their courage, and their ability to tell a good joke.
As the sun set over the city of Rome, casting a golden glow on its bustling streets, whispers began to circulate. Whispers of a prophecy, whispered by the gods themselves, foretelling of challenges and triumphs, of laughter and tears. The brothers, oblivious to the impending trials, continued to revel in the joy and laughter that their city brought to its inhabitants.
But little did they know that lurking in the shadows was a force that would threaten everything they had built. A force that would test their bonds and force them to confront the true meaning of brotherhood. The suspense hung in the air, like a punchline waiting to be delivered.
Rumours started to circulate of a rival city, led by a charismatic and cunning leader. This leader had a taste for power and had set his sights on Rome. He saw the city as a prize to be conquered, a punchline waiting to be stolen. He would stop at nothing to bring Rome to its knees and claim it as his own.
As the whispers grew louder, Romulus and Remus couldn't ignore the impending threat. They knew they had to prepare their city and its inhabitants for the battle that was to come. They rallied their people, inspiring them with tales of bravery and reminding them of the laughter that filled their streets.
The stage was set for an epic showdown, a clash of wit and strength, where the fate of Rome would be decided. The suspense was palpable, as the city held its breath, waiting for the inevitable confrontation.
And so, as the sun rose on the fateful day, the rival leader and his army stood at the gates of Rome, ready to unleash chaos upon the city. Romulus and Remus, fueled by their determination and love for their people, stood tall, ready to defend what they had built.
The battle that ensued was like no other. It was a comical spectacle of sword fights gone awry, armies tripping over their own feet, and catapults launching projectiles in unintended directions. It was a true comedy of errors, where laughter mingled with the sounds of clashing swords.
But amidst the chaos, a moment of suspense gripped the air. Romulus and the rival leader found themselves face to face, their swords locked in a fierce struggle. The fate of Rome hung in the balance, a punchline waiting to be delivered.
At that moment, time seemed to stand still as Romulus and the rival leader locked eyes. The suspense was tangible, as both men fought with every ounce of their strength. Who would emerge victorious? Who would deliver the final punchline?
But just as the tension reached its peak, a loud explosion echoed through the battlefield. The ground shook, and the rival leader was thrown off balance. Romulus seized the opportunity and delivered a swift blow, sending his opponent sprawling to the ground.
The city erupted in cheers and laughter as Romulus stood victorious. The rival leader, defeated and humiliated, retreated with his tail between his legs. Rome had triumphed, and the laughter that filled its streets grew even louder.
As the dust settled and the city celebrated its victory, Romulus and Remus couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought them here. They had faced challenges, endured laughter, and proven that even in the face of adversity, humour could be a powerful weapon. But their victory was not without cost.
Amidst the laughter and celebration, a shadow loomed over Rome. The brothers couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss, that their triumph was just the beginning of a new chapter filled with uncertainty and suspense.
What lay ahead for their beloved city?
As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, Rome continued to flourish. The streets were filled with laughter, the theatres with comedic performances, and the marketplaces with lively banter. But beneath the surface, a subtle tension lingered, a sense that the laughter could turn to tears in an instant.
Rumours began to circulate of a mysterious figure, a shadowy presence that whispered in dark corners and plotted behind closed doors. Some claimed it was a disgruntled rival seeking revenge, while others believed it to be a vengeful god seeking to punish Rome for its audacity.
Romulus and Remus, ever vigilant, tried to uncover the truth. They sought advice from seers and consulted ancient texts, searching for clues to the looming threat. But the answers remained elusive, leaving them with more questions than before.
As the suspense grew, so did the divisions within Rome. Factions emerged, each with their agenda and vision for the city's future. The once-united citizens found themselves at odds, arguing and bickering over the best course of action.
Romulus and Remus, desperate to maintain the spirit of unity and laughter, tried their best to meditate and find common ground. But the tension continued to mount, threatening to tear the city apart.
And then, one fateful night, as the moon shone brightly over Rome, disaster struck. A fire broke out in the heart of the city, spreading rapidly and consuming everything in its path. Panic and chaos ensued as the citizens fled for their lives, their laughter silenced by fear.
Romulus and Remus, their hearts heavy with grief and determination, rallied their people. They fought the flames alongside their fellow Romans, their determination to protect their city unwavering.
As the fire raged on, consuming homes and landmarks, the brothers faced their greatest challenge yet. The suspense was agonising as they fought against the relentless inferno, their every move shadowed by uncertainty.
But just as it seemed that all hope was lost, a miracle occurred. A sudden change in wind direction blew away the flames, allowing the firefighters to gain the upper hand. The city was saved, but the mystery of the fire's origin remained unsolved.
As Rome slowly recovered from the devastation, Romulus and Remus realised that their journey was far from over. The suspense still hung in the air, as they grappled with the aftermath of the fire and the looming threat that continued to haunt their city.
The future of Rome remained uncertain, a punch.
